Because it was close to the New Year, Conor and I decided to skip a few stops along the way and head right to 4000 Islands. We were worried we might get stuck in a place with all transportation shut up cause of the holiday. So we booked a sleeper bus to drive us through the night from Vientiane to the islands.
The bus is very bizarre. It is like double bunk beds on a bus. I was confused alot by it because if you're traveling by yourself you are sharing a bed with a complete stranger. You would have to spoon them all night. It as possibly our weirdest mode of transport so far, and made me even more glad to be traveling with Conor (awe).
I slept on and off throughout the night and we arrived in Pakse around 9am. From there we took a 3 hour van down to the pier. We were headed to Don Det, the Island with a reputation of being more backpacker friendly. Once at the pier, we hopped on this small long boat and rode 15 min to the island. I have to be a little more clear about the 4000 Islands. Because yes there are 4000, but some are the size of a chair (a chair seems like a weird size to compare too, but go with it).
I was cranky when we got there, so after finding a bungalow with a beautiful river view I fell asleep. Conor rented a bike and explored the island for a bit. He came back with a great find- King Kong restaurant so we walked there after my nap. This place was awesome, run by older white hippies, great food, good vibes.
It was a long trip to get there. But I was happy to be somewhere and settled for a few days.
