Getting into Cambodia from the 4000 Islands is pretty easy, especially when you do it through a company. You have to be trusting because some guy is holding onto your passport for a while, but he's usually never out of your sight.
From the 4000 Islands you take a small van stuffed with a bunch of foreigners to the Cambodian border. I was sitting next to an Australian family. 2 parents and 3 young kids- 8,5 and 3. This is where I met my new best friend, Alyssa.
She's 8 years old but repeatedly explained to me that she was almost turning 9, in January. She told me all about her trip so far and all the people she had met- including pictures from her iPod touch. She was a lucky girl who had done some significant traveling in her short "almost 9 year old life" and was on her way to Cambodia for the 3rd time.
After sitting at the border for a while, listening to Alyssa and attempting to draw her a picture of a dog. We all bordered a bigger bus which was making multiple stops in Cambodia. Conor and I sat away from the family because I don't think I could bring myself to entertain her for the next 8 hours.
When we were about an hour away from Phnom Penh, my destination, Alyssa came back to sit with me for the final stretch. She and her family would be continuing on to Siem Reap. We listened to Kelly Clarkson together and played angry birds.
At a Cambodian rest stop we had to say goodbye. I expected her to be a little more upset, but she just waved and said bye. A few days later I saw her in Siem Reap and she wasn't that excited to see me. I was let down because I thought our bus ride meant more. I can only hope that if Alyssa had a blog she would've dedicated an entry to me as well.
